77 – Far Out! News and #RealTalk

What the hell is going on in the world these days? The gang breaks down some news stories from around the globe including tales of cannibalism, odd fiendships in the animal kingdom, racist goats and more. Later, after noticing a trend towards gun ownership amongst Far Out!’s listeners, the crew discusses firearms in our first ever “#RealTalk” segment.

Another solid episode Jazzy Tod. Speaking of music, have you heard Stephen Malkmus’ new solo album? It’s not quite as good as the Pavement stuff but it’s still very good.

I have yet to hear the new Malkmus record, definitely want to check it out though…Is is better than the last Malkmus and the Jicks album?

Have you spoken with Marc recently, Tod? Is Low Budget REALLY over, or is this another case of Marc quitting and then changing his mind later?

Also, apparently that monkey had HEPATITIS, not herpes. So many people misreported that and as a result a lot of radio shows and podcasts got easy chuckles over something that wasn’t real. A hepatitis monkey just isn’t as funny.

And lastly, regarding guns, while I am FAR from a gun nut (never fired one, never touched one, etc.), I find it ironic that the idea of so many of your listeners being gun lovers troubles you. I guess the liberal peace-loving side of you is bothered by it, which is fair. On the other hand, you’re also a big fan of hip-hop, and as we all know hip-hop artists are known for projecting an image of peace and nonviolence, am I right? Or what about your beloved Raiders, they certainly don’t like to foster a culture of aggression and machismo. Right? Just a thought.

And what a coincidence, hip-hop and the Raiders just so happen to have a huge following in Los Angeles, where I imagine the majority of your audience is from. I mean, the idea that fans of that stuff would show off their guns on Facebook? Preposterous!

OK, just so I don’t convey the wrong idea, I’m not being a hater of any of the above. I’m just saying that L.A. culture is so bizarrely inconsistent. You can fantasize all you want about being a badass mofo who’s gonna pop a cap in yo ass for wearing the wrong jersey, but if you like to kill Bambi on occasion then you’re a right-wing knuckle-dragging toothless hillbilly.

    Nice points here, William.

First of all yes, I have spoken with Mr. Chambers quite recently.

Secondly, yes, hepatitis is no laughing matter.

Thirdly, you may have misunderstood my point. What I said
was that, as a person from an area that doesn’t openly embrace a gun, hunting
culture, it’s a bit of a culture shock to see people posing with guns in their
Facebook photos. I also made a point of not having a problem with people being
gun owners. And, my question for these people was, “Sell me on the idea of
hunting…I don’t get it. Change my mind.” Not, some monolithic “guns are bad”
    rant.

Also, I don’t think it’s inconsistent at all to be a person
    who is both:

A.)  Able to be entertained by elements of pop
culture with gun-toting machismo – whether it’s watching Die Hard or listening
    to an NWA album

B.)   Troubled by someone ACTUALLY shooting animals
    for sport

Also, the dudes posing with guns were not our L.A. listeners.

But thank you Mr. William. Your input is always appreciated.
