I wish I knew more about Blu-ray; I haven’t upgraded my TV to an HD, and generally I watch everything on my computer. I guess if I really wanted a movie and it wasn’t available for legal HD download I’d consider getting all the necessary hardware, but it would have to be something I really wanted badly to spend that much money.
Speaking of Blu-ray and sci-fi franchises, I read that they’re planning to bring Star Trek: The Next Generation to Blu-ray. Normally I wouldn’t find that interesting by itself, but apparently they have a dilemma in that all they have stored on master 35mm film is the live action sans computer effects. I guess since it was a ’90s TV show they only used videotape to store the combined live action and effects, whereas in a movie of course you have to combine both on film in order to project it on the screen. The bottom line is that in order to produce a quality Blu-ray transfer they’ll have to redo all the computer effects and recombine them with the 35mm master.
